Marketing With Social Sites

By honest money man

Social networks, are by their nature designed to bring people together. If you have ever spent any time on MySpace you know how easy it is to accumulate large numbers of people in your friends list. The same can be said of Facebook, and the multitudes of copycats. It is easy to connect with people. The problem is actually getting anywhere as a business with it.

You see, people on these sites generally fall into one of two groups. Those that hate businesses on "their" site, and other businesses. A Band or Musician has a bit of an advantage, since most people fail to think of a band as a business, however that's precisely what it is. Of course, most bands fail to see it that way either.

The trick to using a social network site to sell your products, is simple. Don't do it. Now I can feel you pulling away, and thinking this is an attack on using social sites to market things, but it isn't.

What you need to do is market your wares, without looking like you are. You must use the Social sites as social sites, but occasionally you can mention your business. Look at it as casual name dropping during a conversation. The difference is that a site like MySpace could mean there are thousands of people listening in to the conversation. If you play the game right, you will find a little drop of your businesses name here and there, wont sound any alarms and will bring people to you.

Now you should have a better idea of how to properly navigate the Social sites, get out there and start making some real friends.

The plusses and Minuses of Social Site Promotion

As annoying as dealing with all the kids can be, the fact that social sites are a potent force for marketing can not be denied. They are here to stay, and are the future of online marketing. Twitter has already proven how effective sending out simple short text messages can be. The way to think of them is communication tools.

Be it Myspce, Facebook, twitter or another of the myriad of sites that have popped up, they are all about communicating with people. They make it easy to reach a large number of people, sometimes very quickly. If you can learn to communicate at their level, and use that to promote a site and / or product, you can be very successful.

Just be prepared to deal with the people who will interfere. Some people hate internet marketers with a passion, and will try to get your account banned if they can. Others simply take up a vast amount of communication space. These "friend whores" are just looking to get as many people on their friends list as they can. They will send out an amazing number of bulletins, messages and comments, all in the pursuit of more adds, and comments for themselves.

Unfortunately narcissism rules the social networks right now. Myspace is probably the worst in this regard, but it is a problem everywhere. The point of the sites has moved from making friends, and has become how important can I make myself feel. Far too many kids, spend an incredible amount of time in pursuit of feeling important, because of the number of people in their list. Many probably have no idea what the word friend is supposed to mean anymore.

If you can navigate your way through the briar patch, you can put the social sites to good work for yourself. Just understand it will take time and effort on your part to make it worth while.

Social Site marketing can really help you get some good traffic. In fact if you do things right, you wont even need a site of your own. You can just put everything on your page and promote to the millions of people on the sites. Of course, nothing is ever that easy is it?

The problem with these sites is simple. Everyone is more concerned about being more famous, than actually being sociable. The term 'myspace whore' has evolved to describe these people. It is a term that fits. They are the ones most likely to send you friend requests, but unless you have a very interesting name or pic, they wont even bother to check you out. All they want is more people in their friend list. More pic comments, more page comments etc. It's all about them.

This has made it very difficult to get anywhere with using these sites to market anything, no matter how good you might be. They fill up the bulletin posts every minute. They constantly rotate their status with messages. You will have a very hard time getting a word in edge wise. Self centered teens are the most common creatures you will encounter on myspace, and most of the others too.

The benifits of using social sites to market a product are many, but do not fool yourself into thinking it's easy. It will take a lot of time and frustration. Be prepared to hack your way through the jungle to find the treasure.
